Yogi Bear
This movie was about how much Yogi liked to steal picnic baskets! I missed the first 10 minutes of it, so I can't tell you about the very beginning, but I can tell you about the part I saw. (My grandma and I were kind of late.)
A scary part in this movie was when Yogi was water skiing, but he didn't listen to the ranger. The ranger told him NOT to steal any food or get into trouble, but he got in trouble anyway. He water skied and played with fire and his scarf caught on fire! He played with a fire torch! The ranger caught the torch, and saved the fireworks! But, Yogi's scarf caught the fireworks on fire anyway, and they shot towards the people, and the people ran away from the party.
In one part of the movie, there was a frog-mouthed turtle. His mouth was really big, and his tongue was like a frog's. He had the same details as a frog, but was a turtle.
One time, Yogi stole a whole table of food. The ranger came chasing after him. The funny part was when this dog was at the end of the table. He just laid there, and enjoyed the ride!
This movie was cool because it was in 3-D. The snout of Yogi's nose sort of wooshed out at us! Yogi also had a friend--his name was Boo Boo. He was in 3-D, too!
There was kind of a scary part in this movie. They were all on the river, and they were heading for the waterfall. They almost went down the waterfall. When they got caught on a branch, Yogi was like laying down and screaming! Even though they weren't going down the waterfall, he was screaming anyway! That was scary and funny at the same time.
This part scared my grandma: When Yogi picked up a worm from a tree, and said, "Pretend it's a gummy worm, pretend it's a gummy worm," and he ate it! Then, it shot out his nose! It looked really gross in 3-D! Boo Boo was like, "Eew."
Another funny part was when Yogi danced! He said, "Kick it, Boo Boo!" and turned on some weird music, and was shaking his booty! That part really made me laugh!

Tangled
This movie was about a girl named Repunzel. Her mom was a bad woman. She took Repunzel from her real parents when Repunzel was a baby. The mother wouldn't let her go outside, because there were bad creatures out there that could hurt her, like guards.
Another character in the movie was Eugene. Repunzel didn't want her mom to see Eugene. Her mom thinks humans can hurt Rupunzel, so that's why Rupunzel hid Eugene in her closet.
The best part of the movie was at the end, when Eugene and Repunzel killed Repunzel's mother!
There was this yellow, glowing flower that made Repunzel's hair glow. When she sang, her hair glowed. She sang a lot, so her hair glowed a lot.
The scariest part of the movie was when Eugene almost died. The evil mother shot him (I think), but he didn't die. He cut Repunzel's hair really short, then it turned all brown and curly. Then, the evil mother turned very old, and tripped over Repunzel's hair. She fell out the window of the castle and when she hit the ground, she turned to dust (because she was so old!).
The funniest part of the movie was when the chameleon, Repunzel's pet, was on Eugene's shoulder and he started hitting Eugene with his tongue, but Eugene didn't wake up. He kept on sleeping. Then the chameleon shot his tongue in Eugene's ear, and he was like, "Aah!" Then, Repunzel hit him on the head with a pan!
Another funny part was when Repunzel was trying to put Eugene in the closet. She kept going, "Ugh!" because he wasn't going easily into the closet. She got him in, then closed the door on his fingers. But he didn't scream, because he wasn't awake. Repunzel kept hitting him with a frying pan, because she didn't want her mother to know that she was hanging out with a human.
Another funny part was when this Viking looked like a clown-girl. It was really a boy! He kept dancing and it was weird!
It was really sad when Eugene almost died, which I already explained.
The movie ended when Repunzel went back to her parents, who were actually a real king and queen. I don't really know what happened to Eugene.

The main characters in "Megamind" were Metroman, Megamind (of course), Minion (his assistant) and Titan. In the movie, Megamind is a bad guy. He tries to kill Metroman, because Metroman is a hero, and Megamind refuses to have a hero. Metroman likes freedom and happy stuff. He doesn't want people to get killed.
Megamind became a bad guy because when he was in school, he invented something that burned everyone. There was black smoke all over him. He was trying to act like Metroman, because he wanted to be a hero, too, but he kept sitting in the corner of the class while the other children were learning. He thought to himself, "What if I could be the most meanest person of all?" Then he blew up the whole school!
Megamind ran away from jail and went back to his hideout and tried to talk to Metroman. Megamind said, "You've fallen right into my trap!" Metroman said, "My power is weak!" When Metroman tried to explain what he did, he was faking it, because his powers were really NOT weak! Metroman giggled, because he was teasing Megamind.
Right after that, a different building blew up, and Megamind was responsible. Metroman faked his death, and Megamind felt bad about it, because he thought that the skull he found was actually real, but it wasn't. It was just a weird little skeleton. Then, a girl that was trapped gasped, and thought that Metroman actually did get killed. But Metroman was still alive in his hideout, and he grew a beard! But people still recognized him.
Minion teased Megamind, because Minion was dressed up as the warden of the jail. He had this watch on that could help him change into different people. It was a really cool watch! Then, Minion said, "Sorry, you've still got another 100 years in jail!" Then, Megamind said, "Here's all my black heart can say--I'm sorry!" Then, Minion showed who he really was, and he released Megamind from jail. The real warden was tied up in a rope!
The funniest part of the movie was when Megamind used the watch to turn himself into another person (I forget his name). He went out on a date with this girl, and it was kind of funny! When they kissed each other, the girl touched the button to turn him back into Megamind, but she was actually kissing the REAL Megamind! It was so weird!
The scariest part of the movie was when Titan tied up the same girl on a very tall building. He tried to light the building on fire and knock it over, and tried to make her die (Titan was not a good guy--he was sort of a bad guy). Megamind rescued the girl! And here's the cool part: Megamind had an invisible car! He tried to escape in it to go and rescue the girl.
Another funny part is when Megamind was still a bad guy. He said, "Bring out the black mamba!" The black mamba is a cape, and he wore it. It was different than his usual cape. Capes usually have a triangle thing around the head, but this one was HUGE! It looked kind of scary! The black mamba is a snake, which is also scary!
At the end, I didn't feel frightened, because Megamind and the girl found Metroman. She told Megamind, when he found this robe that Metroman wore, "You look good in white!" Everyone became friends at the end, except for Titan. Everyone else lived happily ever after!

Karate Kid
Dre moved to China with his mom. He slept through the plane ride. When they got there, Dre went to his hotel and the hot water wasn't working. He said, "Excuse me, the hot water isn't working." He told that to some guys who did not know how to speak English. Then, Dre said, "Agua?" The guys still didn't understand him!
My favorite part of the movie is when the Karate Kid (Dre) won the tournament! Dre won a cool trophy, and his mother was crying because she was so proud of him.
The scariest part of the movie was when a bully pushed Dre and walked up to Dre's girlfriend. Dre pushed him back. The bully swung Dre over his shoulder and slammed him on the ground, and threw him backwards. Dre stood back up and started to fight again, but the same thing happened.
A funny part of the movie was when Dre thought his girlfriend spoke Chinese, and he was like, "&%**?" Then his girlfriend started laughing, and she said, "What kind of language was that?" Dre said, "You speak English?" and the girl was like, "Yeah!"
At the end of the movie, Dre ended up staying in China. He was really happy to be there, because he won the tournament and everything. He missed his home a lot, but he got used to China. You can even see the Great Wall of China from outer space!

Fistles of Snow
*Note* We aren't quite sure what the title of this movie is, as we saw it nearly a year ago at the Seattle Children's Film Festival. All we remember is that it was good!
This movie was about these little scenes that made my mom cry a little bit, because they were all about friends and family and stuff. Some of the scenes were in a different language. There were subtitles on the screen.
The most interesting part of this movie was at the end when the snowmen were having a snowball fight. But, they didn't use the snow from the ground--they used themselves! They used so much of themselves that they died! The walrus that was watching them was kind of sad, too. He took one of the snowmens' hats and put it on his own head and waddled away.
There was another movie at this film festival called "The Secret of Kells." Some parts made me jump! (You can read my review of that movie in another spot on my blog.)
Another movie in the film festival was about this guy that went on a ship, and had to leave his family at home. He almost got killed, but he ended up coming back to his family. His son was surprised to see him when he came home, because the dad didn't really look the same. He was a little bigger, and shorter, than his son remembered.
One more movie was about a girl who touched a doll, and she somehow ended up inside of the doll. She then was seeing things from the doll's point of view. She was shaking the doll to try to get out, but she couldn't. Every kid that looked in the window got stuck inside of dolls. The dolls were cursed. If you touched them, you ended up inside of them.
That's all for today! Thanks for visiting "Cinema with Sarah." See you later. Bye!

Alpha and Omega
This movie was about these wolves who wanted to get home. The girl's name was Kate, and the boy's name was Humphrey. They got caught by these guns that shot bow and arrows, and it made them tired so they went to sleep, and these guys put them in cages.
A funny part was when Humphrey had to go to the bathroom! The girl said, "Can't you hold it? Did you try crossing? Squeezing?" Humphrey said, "Yes!" Kate said, "Okay, when we stop." Then, when they stopped, he tried, but he lost the feeling. It was weird.
Another funny part was when a wolf was going "Ah-wo-wo-wo-wo!" When the birds heard him, their wings stopped and they fell to the ground. His howl was wo weird!
Then, a goose asked Kate, "Would you like to repopulate?" Kate said, "Argh!" and Humphrey said, "Sounds good to me!" Kate said, "Uh, NO!"
In the end, Kate and Humphrey got back home, and they got to marry each other. At the beginning of the movie, they didn't really know each other, but by the end, they knew each other very well.
A sad part was when Kate got hit by a heard of antelopes, and she almost died. All of the wolves were so sad, they were almost crying. But, she was still alive, and she got better. Humphrey was glad that Kate was still alive.

Despicable Me
There were a LOT of funny parts in Despicable Me! In one scene, a little boy's ice cream fell on the ground, and a bad guy offered him a little animal balloon. He gave it to the bad guy and the kid was squeezing it and teh bad guy wanted it to pop. He took a needle and poked the balloon and the balloon popped on his face! Another funny part was when the guy, Victor, a bad guy, took a bite out of the cookies that the girls were selling, and they were actually fake! There were wires in the cookies--they were actually little cookie robots! Victor didn't really taste the difference.
Another funny part was when the girls and another bad guy were at the fair. There were these games, and one was one where they tried to shoot the spaceship down. The bad guy was like, "I saw her get it with my own eyes!" The guy running the game said, "I don't believe you!" The bad guy took a real gun and shot the spaceship and said, "Okay, she wins!" Then the girl got the toy unicorn.
The story was about the bad guy and the girls, and the minions. The minions were little yellow plankton, but without the antennae. They were kind of like the bad guy's assistants. They didn't really talk, they just made little squeaky noises.
The saddest part of the movie was when Victor stole the kids. It made the other bad guy sad, and turned him into a good guy. When they were on the ship, one of the girls was left behind. The other guy shouted, "Just jump! I promise I'll never do it again!" She jumped, and Victor caught her and she said, "Wait one second..." because Victor was like, "Oh no you don't," and the other bad guy said "Just fight him!" and she tried to jump, but fell down into the sky. Then, the minions and the other bad guy had to try to catch her, so the minions held on to each other and they caught the girl! They were hanging by a thread!
At the end, the other guy turned into a good guy, and he adopted the kids. Victor was stranded on the moon forever! It was a good ending for the good guys, but not the bad guys. The minions turned into good guys, too, along with their owner. Then, the girls had their dance recital, and the bad guy came to it. The minions changed the music, and they all got to go up on stage and dance. Even Victor could hear the music on the moon, and he started shaking his booty!

Tales of the Lost Guardians
The coolest thing about this movie is that it was in 3-D! Things always popped out at me, and it looked like I could touch them. For example, there was smoke, water, and the owl's beak that looked like I could touch them.
The owl hatchlings were really cute. Two owl brothers were also in the movie. One of them turned out to be nice, and the other turned out to be mean. He tried to destroy his brother, but he fell in fire, so the good brother won, but he was kind of sad, because it was his brother.
The scariest part in the movie was when all of the owls got in a fight. It was bad owls vs. good owls. The good owls were like knights, and they were trying to keep the king safe. In the end, they were able to keep the king safe--the good owls won! The bad guys all died. That made me feel happy, because that means the good guys won. Bad guys are mean, and probably would have hurt many more owls.
The saddest part was when someone stole the little hatchlings from their parents. They were going to try to make them fly, but they told the hatchlings to be quiet. The hatchlings were finally returned to their parents. Some of them got hurt, but none of them died.
There weren't really any funny parts in this movie. But, I was happy, because the kids were returned to their parents. Their parents really loved them! I would like to be returned to my parents if someone took me!

Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3 was about when the toys went out on an adventure to preschool. They didn't want to , but they had to, because their owner Andy made them, because he put them in a trash bag and delivered them to the preschool. Woody got left behind, and Woody tried to save them (he didn't get put in the trash bag by accident--he hid). Woody had to rescue them.
My friend, Ruby, was right about Toy Story 3: she said it was kind of scary and kind of sad. The scary part was when they were at the dump, and they had to hang on to a truck, but they accidentally let go of their metal thing and they fell off. Then, the truck stepped aside so the toys could go down like a waterfall of junk, and they were about to go down into fire. This bear, Lotso, was a bad guy. He got up the ladder, then tricked them that he was going to push the red button to stop the junk from going down into the fire. Then the toys said, "Darn it! You tricked us!" Because Lotso was a bad guy.
The funniest part of Toy Story 3 was when the t-rex wanted to get played with--he couldn't wait--but then, he didn't want to get played with, because the pre-schoolers weren't very nice, because they're only kids. The other funny part was when the baby found the potato head and started stuffing the eyes in his nose and mouth and he had a runny nose. Buggers were coming out of his nose! Ew! It was really funny!
The sad part of the movie was that Lotso started out as a good guy, but then the girl that owned him went into the field and left him there, and he came alive, and got really sad when he looked in the window. He saw that the girl who owned him had a new Lotso, and he thought that she didn't love him anymore. That's when he started to be a bad guy, and that was really sad.
Later, the toys came back from their adventure, then the little girl wanted to own them. She said, "There's a snake in my boot!" Andy was like, "What?" Andy was kind of sad to give away Woody, because he was Andy's favorite toy, and Andy really loved him.
Then, the toys lived with that girl, and had a good life.

The Secret of Kells
This movie was about a young boy named Brandon who tried to save the Book of Kells from evil. Brandon had to help draw the designs in the book, and the evil snake eye helped him do it. Then the snake lost his eye, and the snake couldn't see where he was going, and he ate himself.
Brandon's father got hit by a bow and arrow--they were shooting over the fence of the castle--and hit his father in the arm. He turned out okay, though--that was the happy part.
The scariest part was when Brandon went into the evil cave, and said, "There's no such thing as an evil monster," and his friend Ashlen said, "Don't say that, because the monster can get really mad!" Then they had to run out of the cave and go back home. Ashlen said, "I told you!"
The good part of the movie is that everyone turned out okay, and the monsters ran away.
Brandon used the snake eye to draw the shapes in the book of Kells. The drawings in the movie were really pretty. The drawings were like looking through a kaleidoscope.
The ending was a happy ending, because everyone turned out okay, all because of Brandon. Thank you for visiting, and come back soon to Cinema with Sarah.

Babies
The movie "Babies" was really cute. My favorite part was at the end when all the babies learned to walk. It made me feel so happy when they walked, because they were getting bigger, and when you get bigger, that means you learn more things, and go on to the next step (like pre-school or Kindergarten). That's really important to me, because I'm growing and getting bigger, too. I also liked when the cute little baby from Mongolia accidentally peed in his bed. He was laying on his back, and suddenly, he accidentally peed in his bed! That part made me laugh, because it was so cute and funny. I also liked it when the little girl from the United States ate a banana. She kept spitting it out and putting it back in her mouth! Maybe she thought it was yucky, but then thought, "Oh, I guess I was wrong!"
The movie was about all these different babies--how they grew up in different countries. Some grew up outside, like did not live in "regular" houses, and some grew up in houses like mine.
The scariest part of the movie was when one of the moms squirted her baby's face with breast milk to clean him, but then she wiped it off and his face was clean. I thought that she would be spraying it in his face for hours, but she only sprayed a little bit.
I think that all children should see this movie because it was cute. It also taught us how to take care of and support our babies. It taught us about different ways that people live in the world. For example, some families had brown skin, and some had white skin, but they all LOVED their babies!
The part I didn't like was when the Mongolian baby's little brother was mean to him! He kept smacking the baby in the face with a towel, and made the baby cry. He didn't even care about the baby. That made me feel really sad AND mad, because that was really mean. You are supposed to treat babies nicely, like helping or snuggling with them, not hitting them! That is the worst thing you could ever do to a baby.
Someday when I'm a grown-up, I want to have a baby, too!

Grant Street Brewing Company: 12 Steps for Homebrewing Success
My daddy made a movie about brewing. It is really funny. The funniest part is where my dad gets in the bathtub and brews! But don't worry, because he had swimming trunks on in the bathtub, so he wasn't naked. Another funny part is when he turned into an old man while he waited for his beer to be ready.
My favorite song in the movie is that song that plays at the beginning. It has silly instruments and singing in it. I like the clapping!
I liked going to Mt. Baker to film the scenes in the snow. I also liked going to the river to film that scene. We got to throw really big rocks into the river. My biggest rock made a sound like "KERPLUNK!"
The coolest part of the whole movie was when Dad bowed at the end, and turned into a fancy man. When he stood up again, he had a jacket and a tie on. Also, the curtains burst open with red! Before this scene, there was no color.
There was no talking in this movie. It was only the music talking.
Be sure to read more of my blog! Thanks for reading this. See you later, bye!

How to Train Your Dragon
Today I saw "How to Train Your Dragon." I thought it was a very good movie overall. Here are some of my favorite parts.
My favorite part was when the Vikings got to keep lots of dragons as their pets. That made me feel happy, because Hiccup wanted to keep lots of dragons, then his wish came true and their whole house was filled with dragons! It was happy, because they got to take the dragons for rides.
The funniest part of the movie was when Hiccup saw the dragon! He was holding a knife, trying to kill the dragon, then he couldn't do it and dropped the knife. When he walked away from the dragon, he just fainted because he was so surprised that he tried to kill a dragon that was alive.
The saddest part of the movie was when Hiccup's dad wanted to kill Hiccup's pet dragon, and he had him trapped on a boat and he couldn't get out. I cried a little bit because I was afraid that they actually killed the dragon. But, they didn't, so I was happy about that.
The scariest part of the movie was when a really big dragon (so big that it could eat you alive) almost killed Hiccup and his pet dragon! They got broken legs and boo-boos and stuff. When they landed in the fire, it was really scary.
The movie got a little boring when some of the songs were playing. Some songs were a little boring. But, some other songs were good because they made me feel cheerful and wanting to dance (rock and roll songs!).
The ending was a happy one because they got to keep LOTS of pet dragons.
I'm not sure if I would want to have a pet dragon. If he wags his tail, he might whack something and it will fall over and break something else. If he ever roared, stuff would fall over, like things that are up high. I don't think my pet cat, Frank, would like the dragon very much. But, it would be fun to have a dragon so that I could take rides on it!
I got really excited when Hiccup learned to train dragons! Because then he got to be, like, the king of fighting dragons, and got to fight a really scary one. But he couldn't take it, because it was like a KILLING dragon, and Hiccup was like, "I can't do this!" He just dropped his shield and sword and ran away.
The movie got sort of mixed up when the dragon was on a ship, and then Hiccup came to save him. I couldn't believe that they would actually go to that island to defeat the really mean and nasty dragon. I would be WAY too scared to do that! But, if it was one of my friends, I'd do it. If it was like a stranger or a bad guy, I would not do it.
How would you like to be a dragon? I actually would. Most dragons can fly, but I do not want to be a mean one. But I want to be a girl dragon, because a girl dragon would look more pretty! How would you like to be a dragon fighter? I would not, because I'd probably get killed if I were hunting and killing them.
I wish my friends were there to watch the movie with me. If we got too bored during the movie, we could tell knock-knock jokes! And, if I was crying or something, I would have someone to support me. Then, I'd probably stop crying if my friend was there.
Would you like to be a talking dragon, or a quiet dragon? I would like to be a talking dragon, because then I could warn someone that I was going to eat them! I would like to eat people, if there were some around.
Thanks for reading my review! Come back soon!

Would you like to be a talking dragon, or a quiet dragon? I would like to be a talking dragon, because then I could warn someone that I was going to eat them! I would like to eat people, if there were some around.
Thanks for reading my review! Come back soon!

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
Last week, I saw "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel." In this movie, they were trying to win a singing contest. They were competing against the Chipettes, the girl chipmunks.
My favorite part of the movie was the Chipettes singing. Their singing was like rock and roll. It was kind of funny when Alvin was in the football game, and he caught the ball. He scored a touchdown and won the game. All of his friends said, "Good job, Alvin!"
The scariest part of the movie was when the mean man trapped the Chipettes in a cage and wanted them to go in a rock band that they didn't want to be in. Alvin saved them by flying a remote controlled helicopter!
I would recommend this movie to anyone in the world who likes the Chipmunks, because it was really cool.
See you soon! Bye!

Up
"For Christmas, I got the movie 'Up.' The saddest part of the movie was when Carl hit the construction worker in the head, and Carl had to move. It was sad because Carl lived in that house for a long time, and the place he went had mean dogs.
"The scariest part of the movie was when the dogs chased Carl and Russell. The dogs had really big teeth and they growled and barked really loud.
"The happiest part of the movie was when they got Kevin, the bird, back.
"The coolest part was when all of those balloons came out of the chimney. I didn't know that the whole balloon stack could fit up that chimney. It was cool to see the house fly, because I've never seen a house fly before.
"I would recommend this movie to my friends. It was happy at the end when Carl gave Russell his badge.
"Thanks for visiting me. Bye!"

The Princess and the Frog
The very first movie Sarah saw in a REAL movie theater was "The Princess and the Frog." It quickly became one of her very favorite movies of all. Here is what she has to say about it:
"My favorite part of the movie was when the Princess and the Frog got married at the end. I liked this part because then they became friends and lived happily ever after. When they got married, it made me feel really happy because they got a lot of flowers at the end, and I really like flowers.
"The scariest part of the movie was when Dr. Facilier, a voodoo magician, was trying to get the Prince's blood. When they broke the necklace, he wanted to take the prince's blood so the spell would not be broken.
"The funniest part of the movie was when Charlotte said, 'The prince is going to come to the ball! The prince is going to come to the ball!' She was dancing around and leaning on the table and making the coffee fall over.
"The saddest part of the movie was when Raymond, the firefly, died. But it wasn't too sad, because he got to go live in the sky as a star.
"I liked this movie so much because it was new and I saw it in a real movie theater. My favorite characters were Prince Naveen and Charlotte. I liked Charlotte because she was funny and so excited in the movie.
Thanks for visiting me! Good-bye!"

Welcome to Cinema with Sarah!
Greetings, and welcome to "Cinema with Sarah," a blog for cinema-centric kids, by a cinema-centric kid! As a mom, I've always had mixed feelings about my daughter watching movies and videos. On the one hand, depending upon who you ask, all media is evil incarnate, and should be avoided at all costs. And for us, it was, until Sarah was about two-and-a-half. But then, we stumbled upon "Blues Clues," and away we went--full-on into the land of children's media. Admittedly, some of it is pretty bad. However, some of it, like "Blues" and "Kipper" and other family favorites, is pretty darn good.
As Sarah has gotten older, her taste in movies and videos has shifted (of course). In fact, she just saw her very first movie in a REAL theater--Disney's "The Princess and the Frog." And wow--what an impression that made on her. For weeks afterwords, she kept asking me questions, such as, "What was your favorite part of that movie," or, "What was the scarriest part of that movie," or, "What was the happiest part of that movie?" Surely, there's a literacy project in here somewhere.
As a kid who grew up around media (my dad worked for a local television station), I have an insider's understanding of how it's all produced. Nothing is random in video production--it's all created to elicit a response from the viewer--to laugh, to cry, to be afraid, or to (in most cases) buy something. How nice it would be if we were ALL insiders in the world of video production, learning from a young age that viewing any kind of media with a critical eye is necessary to make well-informed choices. Plus, it's not enough (in my view) to just say, "Oh, I really liked it!" Tell me WHY! What, precisely, did you like? Old English teachers never die, you know--they just keep asking for more details!
So, Sarah and I have created this blog as an outlet to combine her emerging critical movie-viewing skills with her newly emerging literacy skills. Hopefully, this information will be useful to kids and parents alike! Stay tuned for periodic updates...
